Next Wednesday, October 13th, is the next Evolutionary Enlightenment Essentials Course conference call, and during our time together we will go more deeply into what it means to let go of everything. I have designed this course based on audio clips that Andrew Cohen gave on the “Being” part of his retreat in Colorado in August. That retreat was devoted entirely to letting go and discovering the primordial freedom of our own true nature.

Next Wednesday, September 29th will be the first conference call of the Evolutionary Enlightenment Essentials Course. In this monthly course I hope to engage you in a profound exploration of the ‘position of enlightenment.’ I will be using audio clips recorded during Andrew Cohen’s twenty-day “Being & Becoming” Retreat that was held last month in Boulder, Colorado. These audios are taken from the first ten-days of the ‘Being’ part of the retreat. In our first call we will explore the purpose of Evolutionary Enlightenment, and relate that purpose to the experience of enlightened awareness. This will set the context for the remainder of the course which will run for eleven months, leading up to the next Being and Becoming Retreat in Tuscany, Italy, in August 2011.
Evolutionary Enlightenment is ultimately about recognizing that we are not separate from the entire process of cosmic evolution. We tend to relate to the idea of evolution as if we are a thing – a separate object – that exists within an evolving process, something like a piece of wood floating down a running river. When we experience Evolutionary Enlightenment we recognize that what we experience as “being human” is not ultimately an experience that we are having only as a separate entity. It is an experience that the universe is having through us in the form of our “separate-entity-ness.” This awakening can be referred to as the experience of evolutionary non-duality, or the direct recognition that you do not exist within an evolutionary process—you are that process. Your experience of being “a person” who has a “name” and a “personal history” is not only the experience that “you” are having—it is the experience that the universe is having right now through you, as you.

In August of 2010 Andrew Cohen led a ten-day “Being” retreat dedicated to the discovery of the liberating depths of enlightened awareness known as the Ground of Being, or the empty ground of consciousness itself. Although Cohen has led many such retreats over his twenty-five year teaching career, this one was unique in the way that Cohen emphasized how it is our intention that gives us direct access to this liberating ground, and how he taught that enlightenment is not an experience to be achieved, but a posture – a stand – that can be taken immediately.
The radical immediacy that he spoke about over and over again had a profound impact on everyone present. It was as if a secret doorway of direct access to enlightened consciousness had been revealed to us. This wasn’t an “easy enlightenment” path. In fact, holding a liberated posture of freedom in the face of our personally and culturally conditioned tendencies takes everything we’ve got and a little more. Nevertheless, the challenge of liberation was nothing in the face of the awe-inspiring recognition that enlightenment, however challenging it might be, is always possible now!

August 2010 will be a month not soon forgotten in the annals of EnlightenNext history. I suppose unofficially the month really started on July 30th with the celebration of Evolutionary Enlightenment Day – an annual holiday commemorating the initial emergence of the unique state of higher consciousness now known as Evolutionary Enlightenment.
